Jake grew up near Medford, Oregon fly-fishing on the Rogue, North Umpqua, and small coastal rivers to the south. He has been fishing for salmon, trout and steelhead for over 20 years and now utilizes most rivers in Oregon. Jake is your trout and steelhead specialist and will occasionally guide salmon trips when salmon runs peak.

Jake has a near coastal captain’s license (6-pack OUPV near coastal-100 miles off shore). Most of Jake's coastal experience comes from 8 summers of working and living in Alaska as a fish guide. He has also guided for Marlin, Tuna, Mahi Mahi, and Ono in Hawaiian waters. In Alaska, Jake guided the Kenai River, Kasilof River, Nushagak River, and various mountain lakes and smaller streams around Cooper Landing, AK.

Jake specializes in many techniques and can help you (1) increase your
skills in your favorite technique or (2) teach you a new one. For
example, in the last few years people have requested to fly-fish (with an indicator) and float-fish (with a centerpin rod).

He is well-known for his ability to pull plugs, use a centerpin rod, side-drift, float/indicator fish, bead-fish, back bounce, and fly fish. Most guided trips he will target steelhead in several different ways, often bringing 3 or 4 sets of rods on each trip (not as messy as it sounds).

Jake is committed to helping you learn to fish the way that you want to learn, while using the methods you want to master.

Jake Mahon is the owner, guide, and consultant. Being "locally owned and operated" Jake takes pride in the river; he is an active advocate of stream cleanup, river safety, and river education. Loving to teach others about his passion, Jake finds happiness in teaching kids to fish and watching someone hook up on their first steelhead.

Jake is currently working on his PhD in School Psychology and his BCBA certification (behavior analyst degree) where he delivers individualized therapy to children with unique behavioral needs. He aspires to connect the worlds of fishing, education, and mentoring in developing a career dedicated to serving disadvantaged youth.

Jake was married in September of 2014 to Elise Marie Boldt on the upper Rogue River and plans to be done with his PhD in 2017. He plans to guide throughout his time at the university. Jake is thankful for his repeat clientele and relies on the income and experience of being on the river to help him through graduate school.

Jake also offers consultation services and teaches fishing seminars across the state of Oregon. His consultation service is for those who own a drift boat but are not yet dialed in enough to consistently catch fish (or as many fish as they would like). It’s no mystery, not everyone wants to hire a guide, even if they could benefit from the help. Jake is licensed and insured to go on your boat with you and help you get things figured out.

Where should the tips of my rods be when pulling plugs?

What about scent? How do I tie the perfect yarn fly?

What size float should I use when running a jig?

Is it safe to put in at this launch at this water level?

Is this anchor big enough?

Why do I get snagged up so much?

How do I row this boat!?

See the “Consultation” tab on the homepage.

Jake is passionate about getting kids outdoors and a fishing rod in their hand. He is a major advocate and volunteer for:

(1) Committed Partners for Youth Mentoring Program in Eugene, OR

(2) Northwest Steelheaders

(3) Eugene Special Olympics

(4) Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife.

Through these organizations Jake actively facilitates getting kids involved in outdoor pursuits.

In the interest of getting kids outside Jake offers cheaper rates for kids during guided trips (see the “Rates” tab on the homepage). Since the main aim of consultation is education, kids under 18 go on the boat free during consultation.
