aBOUT jAKE:

Jake Mahon is the owner, guide, and consultant of Jake Mahon’s Guide Service, LLC. Being “locally owned and operated” Jake takes pride in the river; he is an active advocate of stream cleanup, river safety, and river education. Loving to teach others about his passion, Jake finds the most satisfaction in teaching kids to fish and watching someone hook up on their first steelhead. Jake is your trout and steelhead specialist and will occasionally guide salmon trips when salmon runs peak. All Oregon fishing with Jake is from a driftboat.

Jake grew up near Medford, Oregon fishing on the Rogue, North Umpqua, and small coastal rivers to the south. He has been fishing for salmon, trout, and steelhead since he could walk, and guiding fishing since 2006. Jake also works in the field of pediatric psychology. He received his BA in Psychology, MS in Special Education, PhD in School Psychology, and board certification in Applied Behavior Analysis from the University of Oregon.

TECHNIQUES

Jake specializes in many techniques and can help you increase your skills in your favorite technique or teach you a new one. For example, in the last few years many people have requested to fly-fish (with an indicator) and float-fish (with a centerpin rod) for steelhead. Most guided trips he will target steelhead in several different ways, often bringing 2 or 3 sets of rods on each trip (not as messy as it sounds). In general Jake uses the following techniques while guiding:

  • float fishing with spin gear or centerpin gear
  • pulling plugs
  • side-drifting
  • bobber-dogging
  • back bouncing
  • pitching spinners
  • fly-fishing; indicator or swinging

LICENSURE

Jake has a near coastal captain’s license (6-pack OUPV near coastal-100 miles off shore). Most of Jake’s coastal experience comes from 12 summers of working and living in Alaska as a fishing guide. In Alaska, Jake guided the Kenai River, Kasilof River, Nushagak River, and various mountain lakes and smaller streams around Cooper Landing, AK. He has also guided for warm-water pelagic fish species in Hawaiian waters out of Lahaina Harbor.
